Cycling at Little Andaman: Where the Road Ends, the Story Begins

There are journeys you plan.

And then there are journeys that quietly unfold into something far more meaningful.

This was one of those.

From Air to Sea: The Journey Truly Begins

Every Andaman journey begins in the air.

But the real magic? It begins at sea.

As I boarded the ferry from Port Blair to Little Andaman, I wasn’t just travelling—I was waiting. Waiting for the ocean to reveal something.

The open sea has a way of pulling you in. Endless blue, waves stretching into the horizon, and a silence that feels alive.

And then… it happened.

A sudden movement near the ferry.

Dolphins.

Not one, but a couple of them—gliding effortlessly, almost as if they were guiding us forward. For a few moments, the ferry wasn’t just a vessel… it felt like part, a poetry in motion which sets the rhythm of the ocean itself.

And just when I thought it couldn’t get better—

I spotted a turtle.

That first glimpse made me shout out loud in excitement, calling everyone around me. Within moments, we spotted another one.

And then came the flying fish— skimming across the surface like fleeting silver arrows.

In that journey, I wasn’t just travelling anymore.

I was witnessing life—raw, free, wild, and untouched.

And that’s when it hit me—

Andaman isn’t just a destination. It’s an experience across all three elements.

  • You arrive by air

  • You explore through water

  • And you truly connect through land—on a cycle

Arrival at Little Andaman

Little Andaman lies about 120 km south of Port Blair, and the 6–8 hour ferry ride ensures one thing—you earn your arrival.

And when you finally reach…

You understand why it was worth every minute.

Turquoise waters. White sand beaches. Endless horizons.

A place so raw, so untouched—it almost feels like a secret.

A Bicycle, By Chance

There was just one bicycle shop and one cycle available to be rented, mostly used by the shopkeeper himself and I was able to convince him soon to rent it out to me for 3 Days.

A rustic, no-nonsense machine.

No gears. No fancy setup. Just a simple frame that had clearly seen years of use.

Most people would’ve probably walked away.

But for me, it felt familiar.

It reminded me of where it all began—those early days of cycling through Bandipur, Nagarhole, and beyond on a single-speed bicycle. No performance metrics. No upgrades. Just the joy of moving.

So I took it.

And without realizing it, that one decision shaped everything that followed.

Riding Into the Island

My days at Little Andaman were split between learning and exploring. The astro-guide training kept me engaged, but every morning and evening, I found myself riding through quiet roads—getting a feel of the island.

The distances weren’t huge, but they weren’t small either. Too far to walk. Too unnecessary to depend on autos.

And so, the bicycle became my rhythm.

After the course ended, I gave myself a day

just to ride.

No fixed plan. No strict route.

Just curiosity.

Butler Bay: Where Silence Speaks

My first stop was Butler Bay Beach.

And what I found there wasn’t just beauty—it was stillness.

No crowds. No noise. No rush.

Just waves meeting the shore, coconut trees swaying gently, and a stretch of sand that felt untouched.

I stood there for a while, doing nothing.

And somehow, that felt like everything.

It was here that I truly understood what makes Little Andaman special—not what it offers, but what it doesn’t.

I've also picked up a few coconut saplings back home, a piece of Andaman travelled back with me.

R.K. Pur: A Sweet Pause

From there, I rode towards R.K. Pur, the small town that holds the island’s everyday life.

After hours of cycling, I treated myself to something simple— hot rasgullas and local sweets.

And in that moment, sitting there, sweaty and tired, it felt like the best reward I could’ve asked for.

I had planned to visit the dam nearby, but it was closed by the time I reached.

And honestly, I didn’t mind.

Because the journey had already given me more than I expected.

Kalapathar Beach: Just Me and the Ocean

On my way back, I turned towards Kalapathar Beach.

And once again—I was early.

Early enough to have the place to myself.

The water was calm. The shoreline untouched. The ocean stretched endlessly, almost inviting me in. I had to wait for my friend to accompany me to even take my own photo at the beach!!

To my left, the sea kept teasing me to take a dip.

To my right, dense green forests stood tall and alive.

And in between was this narrow road—rolling, slightly rough, and incredibly rewarding to ride.

The Ride That Took Me Back

This wasn’t an easy ride.

The terrain had its challenges. The bicycle demanded effort.

But every pedal stroke felt real.

It took me back to my beginnings—when cycling wasn’t about performance, but about exploration.

And here I was again, rediscovering that same feeling and joy.

No distractions. No expectations.

Just the road and me.

The Waterfall

Later that day, along with a friend, I rode to one more place— a quiet, lesser-known gem: White Surf Waterfall.

Tucked away, peaceful, and almost empty.

A few locals had just left after a swim. And soon enough, we had the entire place to ourselves.

The sound of falling water, the cool air, the stillness—it was the perfect way to pause after a long ride and here I had the opportunity to take a dip and enjoy the freshwater.

40 Kilometers, One Story

By the time I returned, I had covered close to 40+ kilometers.

On a cycle that most people wouldn’t even consider riding.

And yet, it gave me one of the most fulfilling rides I’ve had in a long time.

The People Along the Way

What made this journey even more special were the people.

Warm. Curious. Welcoming.

Some smiled as I rode past. Some stopped me to ask where I was headed. And many were genuinely surprised to see someone exploring the island on a bicycle.

When they heard I had covered almost the entire stretch, their reactions said it all.

And those small interactions stayed with me.

Why This Ride Meant More

This wasn’t about distance.

It wasn’t about speed.

It was about rediscovering something simple.

The joy of cycling, choosing what’s available…and turning it into something unforgettable.
